Sexual Function of Adult Female Rats in the Undernutrition

Abstract
|
|
|
Two groups of adult female rats, each rat, having a body weight of 150 gm., were fed 60% and 40% of the normal quantity of McCollpm diet respectively under the temperatures from 20°C to 25°C.
This continued for a period of 50 days in which these rats were observed for possible changes in their sexual cycles and patho-histological changes in the ovary. The results revealed that the former group did not show noticeable changes compared with a control group, but in the latter group, the findings were as follws:
1. In the group which was fed 40% of the normal diet, after 16-21 days of the underfed state, the rats showed diestrus cycle which lasted until the end of the observation or even when it wa restored, the cycle was irregular.
2. In the group fed 40% of the normal diet, the weight of ovary per gram of body weight was 4.8% less than that of the normal group.
3. The weight of adrenal gland per gram of body weight increased, by 4.3% in the 60% diet group, and 26.1% in the 40% diet group.
4. In the 40% diet group, mature follicle were very few, and granulosa cells of the follicle were hard to find. The stromal tissue was wider than in the normal group, and stained homogenously by the Sudan III.
